In honor of National Donut Day â June 6th
When I opened my first chiropractic practice at the age of 25, I was full of enthusiasm, optimismâand sugar. My office just happened to be located directly across the street from a Shipleyâs Donuts. If youâve ever had a warm Shipleyâs donut, you know the temptation. I didnât stand a chance.
At first, it seemed harmless. A quick stop two, maybe three mornings a week for a couple of donuts and a coffee. It was part of my routine, and truthfully, I didnât think much of it. Back then, I hadnât yet developed a strong awareness of how food choices impact long-term health. I felt fine, had plenty of energy, and heyâthose donuts were delicious.
But then... my pants started to get a little tight.
I still remember the moment my wife made a lighthearted but pointed comment about my ânew look.â That was my wake-up call. I did the mathâtwo donuts, three times a week, every week. The calories were adding up fast, and it showed. I realized it wasnât a mystery; it was the donuts.
That was my first real lesson in dietary self-control. I stopped my donut habit cold turkey. It wasnât about punishmentâit was about making a choice to prioritize my health. And you know what? I didnât stop liking donuts. I still enjoy them to this dayâjust not several times a week. Now, itâs more like three or four times a year, and when I indulge, I make sure itâs a really good donut. Top shelf only.
This little episode taught me something important:
We donât have to give up delicious foods forever, but we do have to be honest about the frequency. Eating indulgent foods every day and expecting to maintain good health just doesnât work. Moderation is the magic word.
So hereâs my message for you on National Donut Day:
If you havenât already had one this week, go treat yourself today! Enjoy it fully and guilt-freeâbut maybe donât go back tomorrow. đ
To sweet balance,
Dr. Travis
