đŸ© The Donut Dilemma: A Sweet Lesson in Self-Control

In honor of National Donut Day – June 6th

When I opened my first chiropractic practice at the age of 25, I was full of enthusiasm, optimism—and sugar. My office just happened to be located directly across the street from a Shipley’s Donuts. If you’ve ever had a warm Shipley’s donut, you know the temptation. I didn’t stand a chance.

At first, it seemed harmless. A quick stop two, maybe three mornings a week for a couple of donuts and a coffee. It was part of my routine, and truthfully, I didn’t think much of it. Back then, I hadn’t yet developed a strong awareness of how food choices impact long-term health. I felt fine, had plenty of energy, and hey—those donuts were delicious.

But then... my pants started to get a little tight.

I still remember the moment my wife made a lighthearted but pointed comment about my “new look.” That was my wake-up call. I did the math—two donuts, three times a week, every week. The calories were adding up fast, and it showed. I realized it wasn’t a mystery; it was the donuts.

That was my first real lesson in dietary self-control. I stopped my donut habit cold turkey. It wasn’t about punishment—it was about making a choice to prioritize my health. And you know what? I didn’t stop liking donuts. I still enjoy them to this day—just not several times a week. Now, it’s more like three or four times a year, and when I indulge, I make sure it’s a really good donut. Top shelf only.

This little episode taught me something important:
We don’t have to give up delicious foods forever, but we do have to be honest about the frequency. Eating indulgent foods every day and expecting to maintain good health just doesn’t work. Moderation is the magic word.

So here’s my message for you on National Donut Day:

If you haven’t already had one this week, go treat yourself today! Enjoy it fully and guilt-free—but maybe don’t go back tomorrow. 😉

To sweet balance,

Dr. Travis
