Silver Linings – Finding Gratitude in the Unexpected

They say every cloud has a silver lining, and I’ve come to believe that more than ever.

On March 11th, I underwent shoulder surgery—an injury that sidelined me from work, from my routine, and from my ability to serve my patients. It was painful, humbling, and honestly, frustrating at times. As a healthcare provider, I’m used to helping others heal, not being the one laid up in recovery.

But here’s the silver lining: March 11 also happens to be the kickoff of the NCAA Basketball Tournament—March Madness. And for the first time in my adult life, I wasn’t rushing between appointments or working late hours. I was home. I was resting. And yes… I was watching basketball like never before.

I didn’t just watch a game or two—I probably watched nearly every game. It was therapeutic in its own way. It gave my body the stillness it needed to heal, and it gave my mind something joyful to focus on.

So what’s the takeaway?

Life has a funny way of giving us gifts in unexpected packages. And sometimes, those “gifts” come wrapped in a sling and a lot of ice packs.

Even when life takes a detour, there’s beauty to be found. Whether it’s time with loved ones, quiet moments for reflection, or a chance to binge your favorite sport—there’s always a silver lining if you’re willing to look for it.

I’m grateful for my recovery, for basketball (seriously!), and for the support of my patients and community.

Here’s to healing, gratitude, and never missing the Madness again.
