Headaches vs. Migraines: Why “Normal” Isn’t Normal
Over the years, I’ve had countless patients tell me, “Oh, I just get normal headaches.” But let me be clear—there is no such thing as a normal headache. Common? Yes. Normal? Never. If you’ve been living with recurring headaches or migraines, you’re not alone. More than half of all people experience headaches each year, and about 1 in 7 live with migraines. The difference is important—and so is finding the real cause.
Headache vs. Migraine
Headaches: Often tension-related, with dull, achy pain and tightness across the forehead, temples, or back of the head. They can last hours to days.
Migraines: Usually one-sided, much more intense, and often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and noise. Migraines can stop life in its tracks.
Common Causes I See in Practice
Headaches and migraines have many possible triggers. Some of the most common include:
Vascular changes – when blood vessels constrict or dilate
Digestive/vagal nerve involvement – stomach or gut imbalances that influence the brain
Mechanical issues – tight muscles or spinal misalignments (subluxations), especially in the upper neck
Toxins & sensitivities – reactions to chemicals, fragrances, foods, or environmental triggers
Dehydration – sometimes the simplest solution is drinking more water
After decades of helping people, I often say: anything can cause anything. The key is finding out what’s causing your headaches or migraines.
How I Approach It
In my office, I begin with a thorough chiropractic exam of the spine, especially the cervical spine. Misalignments here can put pressure on nerves and muscles that contribute to pain.
Next, I perform a Nutrition Response Testing® exam to uncover hidden or underlying causes—whether food sensitivities, toxins, or nutrient deficiencies. Sometimes I’ll ask patients to keep a food log to identify patterns and triggers.
With the right information, we can create a personalized, natural plan to bring real relief—without relying on quick fixes that only mask symptoms.
Closing
If you’ve been living with what you thought were “normal” headaches, maybe it’s time to take a closer look. Relief comes from finding the cause and giving the body the support it needs to heal.
No headache is normal. And you don’t have to live with them.
