What is Subluxation?
To put it simply, a subluxation is a bone out of place. It is usually used in reference to the bones of the spinal column, also called vertebrae. So a vertebral subluxation is a misaligned vertebra. The subluxation is actually a "complex" since several different parts of the spine are affected. The subluxation affects the nerves that leave the spinal cord and pass between the bones of the spine as they go to the various parts of the body. The subluxation also affects the disc, which is the "cushion" between the vertebrae. Subluxation can cause pressure or stress on the disc and can eventually contribute to degeneration and decay. Another part of the subluxation complex involves the facets, or joints. Each vertebrae has 2 joints with the vertebra above it and 2 with the vertebra below it. When the bone becomes misaligned, the integrity of these joints is compromised. This can lead to painful motion and eventually to arthritic changes. Finally, the subluxation affects the soft tissue that supports the spine. This is the muscles, the ligaments, the tendons and the fatty tissue that fills in the spaces. The misalignment can cause the ligaments to become tight on one side and loose on the other. It can also cause irritation and inflammation of the soft tissue leading to pain, swelling and muscle spasm. From this description of the subluxation complex, it is easy to see how someone could experience a range of symptoms and problems. The subluxation could cause tingling in the hand (nerve component), restricted range of motion (facet component), and muscle spasms (soft tissue component) all at the same time. That is why each case is different and has to be evaluated on its own presentation of symptoms.
The Chiropractor has several tools for the treatment of subluxation. The main method of approach is manual spinal manipulation, also called the adjustment. The Chiropractor uses his hands to re-align the bones of the spine and to restore mobility to the joints of the spine. He or she may also use physical therapy modalities to treat the soft tissue components like swelling or muscle spasm. Exercise and stretching are often recommended to improve muscle tone and posture. Nutritional supplements or herbal remedies are also utilized when needed to support the overall healing process. Chronic subluxations take time to correct. Depending on how long the subluxation has been there, it may take weeks or months of regular care to restore the spine to optimal function. The sooner the problem is detected, the quicker it will respond to care.

When is the last time you had a subluxation check-up? It is important to get regular spinal adjustments to correct and prevent vertebral subluxation. I recommend a check-up at least every 30 days. If you are more active or if you have some underlying spinal condition, then perhaps more often. If you have never had a chiropractic evaluation, then now is the time. Chiropractors are the only health care professionals who specialize in detecting and treating vertebral subluxations and the effects of vertebral subluxations Getting regular chiropractic evaluation is one the best things you can do to insure the health of your spine and body.
